This unique area is a combination of trails - deer path style and logging roads with incredible old growth trees. The hilltops unfold picturesque vistas of surrounding waters with outlying islands and Canada. It is green and full of trees and flowers and pretty, rocky outcroppings. It is used by a wide variety of people for many different purposes. It is a place schools bring children to teach them about the nature in their own community.
There is increasing awareness of the need for more physical activity among both adults and children. Hikers, bikers, bird watchers, naturalists and horse back riders are some of the many users on this property. Since Friday Harbor is the county seat and the only town in the county, it draws people from many of the other islands which compose the county. The National Parks on San Juan Island are a frequent destination of in-county visitors as well as many from afar.
Roche Harbor Resort, an extensive internationally recognized destination for both marine and terrestrial visitors, is adjacent to the Mitchell Hill property. Roche Harbor manages a network of trails leading to the boundary between the two properties. The management of the resort has worked with the National Park and with the Trails Committee to encourage the establishment of a continuous route from Roche Harbor Resort to English Camp and beyond, open to the public attraction of businesses and visitors by enhancing quality of life; recreational benefits for diverse groups of individuals and activities, and enhancement of real estate investment values, among others.
